TVRI South
Sulawesi invited the department of English and Literature (BSI) Faculty of Adab
and Humaniora, UIN Alauddin Makassar to participate in the program Kampus Millennial
episode 30 on November 4th, 2022. This weekly program is initiated
and produced by Dr. Eddyman W. Ferial, who is also a scientist in the
university of Hasanuddin (UNHAS). This program is likely to provide a space for
universities both students and lectures to casually and academically talk the
current trend faced by the youth in South Sulwesi, now known as kaum
millennial. One current phenomenon is bahasa jaksel, a mixed code between
Indonesian and English, and BSI was assigned to discuss the topic, “Tren
Berbahasa Inggris di kalangan Millennial/ Speaking English trend articulated by
the Millennial. The host of Kampus Millennial
Fahriani Patahuddin offered several problems
including; whether bahasa Jaksel is a sign of language competence among youth
in Indonesia, or a sign of decadence of national culture; and the intention of
the youth to preserve their national and local language.
This program provides a perspective on English-language trends among millennials. Millennials learn English to access wider knowledge from various culture abroad. The language phenomena, popularly known as "JAKSEL English" that, first, was articulated by youth living in South Jakarta, and then spread widely throughout Indonesia. Some view this issue as a threat to the use of national language due to youth’s tendency to break the code of language rules. Therefore, the use of Indonesian standard and English standard separately is significantly important to enforce in to students in class room, according to two alumnae, Dr. Faidah Yusuf, M.Pd and Masykur M.Pd who are now teaching at state universities in Makassar. Besides, it is also important to grow their interest in using their own local language as an effort to maintain the language as the cultural wealth and as symbol of ethnic identity as well as national identity.
The Head of English and Literature Department, Dr. Jumharia Djamereng, M.Hum., and the secretary of English and Literature Department, Syahruni Junaid, S. S., M.P.d. accompanied their students at this event. The Dean of Adab and Humaniora Faculty, Dr. Hasyim Haddade and Vice Dean, H.Muhammad Akbar Rasyid, M.Pd. Ph.D supported the students to attend the program. This program was conducted TVRI at 18.00 - 19.00 WITA on Friday, 4th November 2022 in TVRI South Sulawesi. This event carried out live streaming in TVRI YouTube Channel. Dr. Umar Thamrin, M.Hum and Dr. Rosmah Tami, S.Ag., M.Sc., M.A., both Fulbright Scholarship alumnae, suggested that youth should be fluent in their national language as the basis of mastering the foreign language. As the result, when they speaking bahasa Indonesia, they speak it beautifully, and when speaking English, they speak it fluently and correctly.
