Gowa, July 27, 2025 — With the theme "Get Close with Culture and Nature," lecturers and students from the English Language and Literature Department (BSI), Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Alauddin Makassar, held a community-centered activity at Pondok Tahfidz Ashabul Jannah, Gowa. The event blended English language education with cultural appreciation and nature awareness, offering a meaningful learning experience for the local Islamic boarding school community.

The one-day program, held on Sunday, July 27, 2025, featured a rich lineup of activities focused on literacy and meaningful engagement with the natural environment.

The event opened with remarks from the Head of Department and the school principal, followed by a Qur’anic recitation by the santri. Participants then engaged in themed educational sessions delivered by expert lecturers:

  • Dr. Jumharia Djamereng inspired students through a motivational session on the steps to success and how to stay committed to achieving their dreams. Her talk encouraged self-belief, discipline, and a vision for the future.

  • Ahmad, S.S., M.Lit. shared a reading of the story "The Giving Tree," bringing to life its messages of generosity, sacrifice, and the beauty of nature through expressive storytelling in English.

The heart of the event was the Spelling Bee Competition, which featured vocabulary related to both nature and culture. The atmosphere combined academic excitement with a deep respect for local context.

Lecturers and students also facilitated discussion circles where santri reflected on their environment, culture, and the role of language in expressing both. BSI student volunteers played a vital role in mentoring and coordinating the sessions, gaining hands-on experience in educational outreach.

The program closed with a prize-giving ceremony, group reflections, and a thank-you message from the organizing committee.

This initiative underscored BSI’s commitment to connect academia with society by nurturing not only linguistic competence but also cultural pride and environmental awareness.
