Students of the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University (UINAM) class of 2020 held a program visit to Tana Toraja as the final of the English for Tourism course.
One of the tourist destinations that became the object of the visit was the tourist village of Lembang Nonongan, Toraja on January 13, 2023. Entering the category of cultural tourism, Lembang Nonongan village has been named one of Indonesia's best tourist villages.
This activity was attended by 93 students and 3 supervisors who were gathered in one visiting group. Arriving at the tourist village of Lembang Nonongan, which was directly welcomed by a local tour guide, the group was greeted with a welcoming dance accompanied by live music, which continued with a traditional rice-pounding performance.
Not only watching performances, but students also have the opportunity to practice directly, such as learning the rhythm of drums and the rhythm of pounding rice which are carried out simultaneously.
One of the lecturers, Syahruni Junaid S.S., M.Pd, said that this program was an alternative program for the final English for Tourism assessment which she felt was more effective than just filling out a question sheet.
"This has been a tradition since 2010, where lecturers of each class collaborate to become mentors during the program to assist students from departure to return with the aim that students not only know the theory but can also feel first-hand experience," he said.
Activities in the village of Lembang Nonongan were closed with dinner together in the yard of the tongkonan traditional house with a Toraja special menu, Papiong chicken, and Mayana leaf vegetables. “With the warm welcome from the villagers, we can enjoy this visit. Not only history, we also get a lot of Toraja cultural insights.” Said one of the visiting participants.
