Gowa,17 June 2025– Sophia Smaragdina H., an outstanding student from the Department of English Language and Literature, has been officially selected as a delegate for the prestigious Indonesia Youth Summit (IYS) 2025, held on June 13–14, 2025. This annual national forum brings together young leaders from across the archipelago to collaborate, discuss pressing national issues, and formulate actionable solutions for Indonesia's future.

Under the theme “Gen Merah Putih”, IYS 2025 promotes progressive nationalism, cross-sector innovation, and inclusive leadership among Indonesian youth. Taking place in Makassar, the summit serves as a platform to showcase regional potential, advocate for environmental sustainability, and encourage creative and digital-based economic transformation.

Sophia’s selection stems from her long-standing commitment to youth empowerment, social development, and policy advocacy. “This summit offered me not only the excitement of participating in a national forum but also the unique opportunity to be involved in the drafting of official policy recommendations addressed to the government. It was a powerful learning space and a starting point for real contribution,” she reflected.

She expressed sincere gratitude to her biggest supporters—her parents, her classmates from 2AG1 BSI, and fellow delegates at the summit—who continually cheered her on and recognized her efforts throughout the program.

During IYS 2025, Sophia achieved several notable milestones, including:

  • Being appointed as a podium speaker representing the Makassar delegation, where she spoke on the urgency of regulating street infrastructure, especially regarding illegal parking and unauthorized levies.

  • Performing twice in the arts and culture showcase, highlighting her talent in singing.

  • Contributing to the drafting of the Youth Policy Recommendation Communique, an official document to be submitted to relevant government stakeholders.

From her experience, Sophia gained invaluable insights:

“Indonesia is entering its demographic bonus era, where youth make up the majority. That means we, the young generation, are the main actors in determining the future of our nation. Resolutions matter, but action is what truly drives change.”

She also emphasized that every individual possesses unique expertise across fields—from economy and education to social advocacy and politics—and that such diversity is not a measure of intelligence, but rather an invitation to grow and explore.

Sophia’s journey at IYS 2025 serves as an inspiring example of youth leadership in action, reinforcing the power of passion, collaboration, and purpose in shaping Indonesia’s future.
