Makassar, 6 Oktober 2025 –A Lecturer from the English Language and Literature Study Program (BSI), Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Alauddin Makassar, Dr. Purnama Cahya, served as a speaker in a hybrid seminar titled “GENIUS: Generative AI for Ethical Use in Nurturing Innovative Usage for Students.”
The event took place on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA), held both offline in the Faculty of Adab and Humanities meeting room and online via Zoom. The seminar was attended by new students from the English Language and Literature Study Program, as well as lecturers from the Faculty of Adab and Humanities.
In her 60-minute presentation, Dr. Purnama discussed the smart, wise, and ethical use of Generative AI (GenAI) in English language learning. The material was based on the Guidelines for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Learning issued by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI).
She emphasized that AI is a tool to assist, not replace, human thinking processes. “AI can be used for brainstorming, improving grammar, or understanding academic texts. However, responsibility for the final output remains with the user,” she explained.
Based on a survey presented during the session, most students have been using Generative AI regularly, mainly for generating assignment ideas, improving grammar, and understanding academic texts. However, 77.8% of respondents stated that ethical guidelines for AI use are needed to maintain academic integrity and prevent plagiarism.
The seminar was designed to transform students’ anxiety about using AI into competence and confidence in utilizing it responsibly. Participants also received practical guidance on anti-plagiarism strategies and examples of AI applications in writing, speaking, and research.
This activity is part of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities’ commitment to enhancing digital literacy and upholding academic ethics amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology.
